History of Ca’Marcanda
Founded in 1996 by Angelo Gaja, Ca’Marcanda embodies a modern interpretation of Bolgheri’s unique terroir. Promis, the estate’s entry-level bottling, was created to emphasize purity of fruit and early drinkability while maintaining the refinement for which Gaja is renowned.
Vineyard & Winemaking
Grapes for the 2020 vintage are sourced from hillside plots with well-draining sandy-clay soils. After hand harvesting, the fruit undergoes cold maceration followed by fermentation in stainless steel vats. The wine matures for 6–8 months in concrete and stainless steel to preserve freshness and vibrant fruit character.
Tasting Notes
The 2020 Promis Ca’Marcanda pours a bright ruby red. The nose bursts with wild cherry, raspberry and cranberry, accented by violet, lavender and a hint of Mediterranean herbs. On the palate, it’s medium-bodied and elegantly structured, with juicy red fruit flavors, crisp acidity and fine, integrated tannins leading to a clean, lingering finish.
Food Pairing
This versatile wine shines alongside tomato-based pasta, grilled lamb chops, roast pork or aged pecorino cheese. Its freshness also complements vegetarian dishes, charcuterie and lighter fare.
Aging Potential
While designed for early drinking, the 2020 Promis will develop greater complexity over the next 5–7 years, revealing tertiary notes of tobacco, leather and dried spice.
